In Just Listen, Sarah Dessen creates a realistic world that any teenager would be familiar with and explores it fearlessly. She neither dumbs down nor cleans up her protagonist Annabel's high school experience, so there are some bad words and risky behaviors included in the narrative. Review: Just Listen by Sarah Dessen. Posted on September 30, 2018 October 2, 2018 by kellyvincent. I first read Just Listen a few years ago and I loved it, mostly for Owen, the male lead. Just Listen is my favourite Sarah Dessen. novel.. It follows the life of a girl named Annabel, who does modelling and things like television commercials, who appears to have everything. Her life is not so like that in real life though because she has to deal with an anorexic sister, a best friend turned enemy and being bit of an outcast at school. Review: Just Listen by Sarah Dessen. So I’m very embarrassed to say, I didn’t catch on right away. What the heck am I talking about, you might ask? Well, the fact that Sarah Dessen makes connections between her books. Characters from previous books can make cameo appearances, and various locations make appearances too.
In Sarah’s Words. People are always interested to learn where a story comes from, and I’m often asked where I get the ideas for my books. The truth is, sometimes I don’t even know: rather than just one big moment, it’s often a lot of little random thoughts, scribbled notes on scraps of paper and backs of receipts, that make up a novel. Just Listen is thick with pages (nearly 400!) and with quality content as well. Annabel and Owen's budding relationship is just as interesting as Annabel's interactions with her mother, and her sisters, and her former friends. As I read, I was completely awed by Dessen's complete mastery of the many plots she explores.
