Wampler Ego Compressor Review – Best “Ross/Dyna Comp” Pedal?

The classic Ross Compressor & MXR Dyna Comp are archetypical guitar compressor pedals with a distinct compression sound that is still highly regarded today by many guitarists. But these classic designs are also known for their drawbacks, mainly tonal coloration, a lack of parameter control, and a high level of signal noise. Here's the classic DynaComp compressor from MXR. This frequently cloned and copied effect has been an industry standard since it was introduced in the 70s. It uses the CA3080 IC, which can be a bit expensive and/or difficult to source as it is a rather obsolete chip. Hey guys and gals, dont hang out in the effects forum very much and I am sure this has been asked before BUT here it is again: What is a decent compressor that wont destroy my wallet?

This is a mod I recently devised for the dynacomp / ross compressor to blend in the uncompressed signal back in. I loved the Ross's sustain and quiet behavior, but wasn't crazy about the slow attack that it seems stuck with, which makes a "pop" on the attack of each note before the compressor clamps down. Comp Version*: : REV5 with Mix Trimpot on board- We can put the MIX control on the circuit board, so you can set and forget it. Turn it down all the way for no dry sound blended in, like our older versions and Dynacomp, Ross, etc. Turn it up all the way for no compression, just a great clean boost/buffer pedal. The modulation before delay or delay before modulation dilemma can also often be resolved based on which pedals have mono or stereo inputs & outputs. Even if going mono most of the time it is nice to have the stereo capability ready to play with by just adding a few jack plugs rather than having to move & rewire several pedals.

Compressors for guitar started to appear in the mid 70s, with the MXR DynaComp and Ross Compressor among others. These had two controls – sustain and volume. So I keep thinking about trying a compressor in front of my chain, just to balance out the strings and add some sustain/beef up dirt pedals. Im not really a huge fan of noticeable squish. That usually ends up with a million votes for a Diamond Comp or a Tone Press. Im not shelling out that much, ... Another mod that can be implemented is to connect the middle lug of the “Blend” control to ground instead of to a reference voltage. The mix control is dc isolated by C19, C20 and C22 and does not need to be biased to a reference level. I’ve been researching Compressor pedals and there are too many options to choose. I don’t want to get stuck with a loud hiss or bypass issues, etc..from what I understand the Ross and Keeley pedals are what you want but I would love to have a tube compression pedal to go along with the rest of my gear.

A lot of older circuit designs (DynaComp, Ross Compressor, etc.) use the CA3080, which is now obsolete and rather expensive. The LM13700 is essentially two 3080s in one chip, and much more affordable. Here's a conversion board to use the 13700 in place of the 3080. Use long header pins, mounted from the solder-side of the board. The blend control is where it is at. Mine is at 10:30. At 5:00 its full squash, there are subtle squash differences to the Dynacomp. I find that the “squash” of the Barber is less, shall I say, abusive to my tone.

IMO, the best compressor is the one you don't notice until you turn it off. To me, there's three flavours of compression: Ross/Dynacomp style, Orange squeezer style, and optical compression. Dynacomp/Ross styles can be very clicky and help your guitar have a little more bite and snap. Think of the into to "Life in the Fast Lane" by the Eagles. The blend knob is super useful and it can also be used for a little gain bump if you need it. The small box version is always on my board because it does so many things well. The Boss with the Monty Allums mods was a surprisingly good unit and if you can find one used & do your own mod it’s a pretty great bang for the buck. _____

To my ears, if you turn the blend knob up it can do the pumping compressor type of sound, but still with a more balanced sound than a Dynacomp (which can be quite top-heavy, IMO). So, I picked up a BOSS CS-3 on eBay, and am tempted to flip it already. I really don't want to spend more than $60 on it, but am willing to look at used MXR's or other options. The most versatile compressors I've used were the ones with a "blend" control. It allows the user to blend the compressed signal with the uncompressed signal. The ones I'm familiar with that do that are the Barber Tone Press and the Wampler Ego Compressor. I think there are a couple more but I haven't used them. My favorite is the Barber. Cheap compressors tend to do more harm than good. After getting a well known floor modeling unit, I use its flexibly routed emulations of various compressors, and don't even use my fancy analog compressor stompbox, which is surprising, since I used to obsess over analog compressors.
